The Modern Lovers – I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms (1973)

October 2, 2019 – Day 124

Recorded in 1973 but not released until 1981, “I Wanna Sleep In Your Arms” was co-credited to James Osterberg, also known as Iggy Pop. Credit was given to acknowlegge that the song borrows the riff from “I’m Sick Of You” by Iggy & The Stooges. The song was likely abandoned and not released because Jonathan Richman wanted to move away from the punk and hard rock sound to a softer sound. Despite the stolen riff and the fact that it was stolen, this song has a great energy. Jonathan Richman shows early in his career that he can command attention – his little laugh to start the lyrics, a “here we go” to intro the solo and a “one more” to intro the last chorus, he’s all charisma. “You know I never can relax / I’m always stiff and tense / I gotta to sleep in your arms / Wrap me up in your hands”
